Two Talks in One Day
Madison and Abigail both spoke in church yesterday. Madison in Sacrament Meeting and Abigail in Primary. Madison started preparing her talk a few days before Sunday so she was ready to go but we completely forgot about Abigail's talk until right before we left for church. For once I was grateful for the 40 minute drive to church because it gave Abigail plenty of time to write her talk. I thought both Madison and Abigail did a fantastic job and I wanted to share them here for everyone to read.
First Madison's talk -
Hello Brothers and Sisters. This year the theme for the youth is the 13th article of faith, which says, “We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men. Indeed we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul, We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous lovely or of good report or praiseworthy we seek after these things” The word virtue come from the Latin word virtus, which means strength. As members of the church, seeking after virtue will strengthen us. How can we seek after virtue? By basing our thoughts and actions on high moral standards, by preparing to be worthy to enter the temple, and by following the Savior’s example.
We can seek after virtue by thinking and behaving virtuously. Sister Elaine Dalton, the Young Woman General President has told us that virtue should garnish our thoughts. In Mosiah 4:30 it says, “Watch yourselves, and your thoughts, and your words, and your deeds and observe the commandments of God.” It is important to have virtuous thoughts because our thoughts become our words and our words become our actions. If we think virtuously, we will speak virtuously; when we speak virtuously, we will act virtuously. When we go to church it is easy to think about Jesus and virtuous things. We listen to our teachers and use their lessons in our lives. At school and other places, it can be hard to have the strength to resist temptation and keep our thoughts holy. By always having virtuous thoughts we can have the strength to make good choices.
We can seek virtue by always being worthy to enter the temple. To be worthy to enter the temple we need to attend our church meetings, be morally clean, pay a full tithing, be honest with those around us and kind to our family members, follow the Word of Wisdom, and have a testimony of the gospel. When we do these things and remain worthy to enter the temple “at all times, and in all things, and in all places” we can have the Holy Ghost be with us. The Holy Ghost can strengthen us and help us to live a virtuous life.
We can seek after virtue by following the example of Jesus Christ. The Savior chose to live a virtuous life and we can too. In Doctrine and Covenants 19:23 He told us, “Learn of me, and listen to my words.” We should be studying our scriptures and saying our prayers daily. We can learn of Him by reading the Book of Mormon. When we apply the scriptures to our lives we can become more like Christ and live a virtuous life. We can follow his example of service, love, and righteousness. Following the Savior’s example will make us happy. Jesus Christ is our best example of being strong and living a virtuous life.
I bear my testimony that it is very important that we stay virtuous every day especially today in these times. I know if we keep our thoughts and actions clean, stay worthy to enter the temple, and follow Christ’s example we can lead a virtuous life. I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
And now Abigial's talk -
The scriptures teach me how and when to pray. In Alma 34:17-27 it says:
Therefore may God grant unto you, my brethren, that ye may begin to exercise your faith unto repentance, that ye begin to call upon his holy name, that he would have mercy upon you;
Yea, cry unto him for mercy; for he is mighty to save.
Yea, humble yourselves, and continue in prayer unto him.
Cry unto him in your houses, yea, over all your household, both morning, mid-day, and evening.
Yea, cry unto him against the power of your enemies.
Yea, cry unto him against the devil, who is an enemy to all righteousness.
Cry unto him over the crops of your fields, that ye may prosper in them.
Cry over the flocks of your fields, that they may increase,
But this is not all; ye must pour out your souls in your closets, and your secret places, and in your wilderness.
Yea, and when you do not cry unto the Lord, let your hearts be full, drawn out in prayer unto him continually for your welfare, and also for the welfare of those who are around you.
This means that we should and can pray anywhere and anytime. Heavenly Father wants to hear from us. In the last verse, it talks about praying even when we are not praying out loud. We can always have a prayer in our hearts. This means that whenever we need to talk to Heavenly Father or ask for His help we can. Even without praying out loud.
I know that Heavenly Father loves us and wants us to pray to Him. I know I can pray to Heavenly Father anywhere and anytime and He will hear and answer my prayers. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
