Fifteen!

Madison is now fifteen!  It was surely an exciting day for her, but as a parent I feel both joy and sadness as our kids grow older.  It really is gratifying to see what an amazing person she has become and is becoming but I do miss the little girl she used to be.   Anyway, one thing we love about Madison is her easy going attitude about life.  She wasn't too concerned about what type of cake she had as long as it had chocolate frosting and she really only wanted books for presents.  Since we didn't have any really specific instructions we just had some fun with the celebration.  Emily and I made this lovely cake; surrounded by kit kats and topped off with m&m's.  It looked really fun and I think Madison was surprised but it was hurt your teeth sweet. Madison is really into Dr. Who right now and Emily put a lot of time into decorating the living room with fun Dr. Who pictures and signs.  I've never actually watched the show so I...

Sweetkraut

The Fasching season is over now, but I wanted to quickly share my favorite part of this year's celebration - a song Natalie learned at Kindergarten.  Their theme for Fasching at Kindergarten this year was The Three Robbers .  They had a robber breakfast, made wanted posters for each child, and sang a lot of songs.  Their Fasching celebration ended with a big party where all the kids wore costumes; Natalie dressed up in the same ladybug costume she wore at Halloween.    Natalie loved this particular song and really got into each of the characters.  The first time she sings it through she's being a robber, the second time a witch, the third time a kindergarten child, and the last time a giant.  Enjoy!

Spelling Bee

Life can be so surprising.  It's normally Abigail who is considered to be the great speller in our house, but this year Emily won her class spelling bee and went on to the main event - the school spelling bee. The thing is though, Emily is not such a great speller.  I think it's mostly because she writes so fast that her brain doesn't have time to keep up.  She came home with a list of seventh grade words to study, but didn't really spend much time studying until the two days before the spelling bee. Our school is K-8 and the spelling bee is open to third through eighth graders which means that there are words aimed at every level of speller.  The thirty-nine contestants were lined up by grade, starting with the eighth graders and moving on down to third - making Emily contestant number five. Round 1 - Waiting for her turn to spell... and spelling her first word:  SOME  I guess it was one of the third grade words?  The only thing...
