Where's Waffles?
November 26 - We made it to an actual Christmas Market for our Family Home Evening this week and guess who forgot to bring a camera? So, the only picture I have today wasn't taken by me but was copied from the base newspaper's article advertising the upcoming market. We wanted to start out the year in Kaiserslautern because we like their Kindergluhwein best and because it's an easy market close to home. We can park at the church (free parking!) and take a short walk to the pedestrian area of town where the Christmas Market is held.
We spent most of our time at the market last night looking for waffles. We found crepes right away and some of the girls were fine with crepes, but about half wanted a waffle. Right next to the crepes stand was a kiddie ride that the kids wanted to go on, but I said no because it was creepy. There were cars going around on an oval shaped track and in the middle of the track were a bunch of robotic Christmas figures. The creepy part to me was the Santa who talked and sounded more like Satan than Santa. However, the real Santa was at the Market last night - someone we've never seen there before - and was handing out candy to all the kids. We were set with crepes and chocolates from Santa, it was time to move on and look for waffles. We passed stands selling roasted nuts and sheepskin slippers, more crepes and fried calamari, and even incense and personalized mugs, but still no waffles. We did get some Kindergluhwein in the 2012 mugs which, by the way, look just like last year's mugs except for being green and saying 2012.
Then we walked behind the big, old church (the market is spread out in the pedestrian area around the church) to see if we could find waffles at one of the booths there. We still didn't see any waffles but there were several large logs that were standing on one end and had been lit on fire so people could stand around them and get warmed up. There was also one booth that was filled with all sorts of things made of wood. Bread boards, candle holders, ornaments, nativities, toy swords and shields, and even wooden Christmas trees that would look great on our front porch. I think I want to go back someday without the kids when I can spend more time looking and get something special to bring home. There are always booths selling candles, candies, ornaments, toys, roasted nuts, scarves, and hats as well. Anyway, lots of great stuff behind the church, but still no waffles. We did find a little ferris wheel and the four younger girls all went for a ride. It really was a tiny little ride with just six passenger cars and was only about as tall as the gutters on our house. The girls had fun though and while they were busy on the ride Jared bought me my favorite thing at the Kaiserslautern Market, potato pancakes with applesauce. So warm and yummy with a perfectly crispy outside.
You know what else is warm and yummy? Yep, waffles, but we still hadn't found any. At this point we'd been almost through the entire market and were about to give up on waffles and just get the girls who'd been holding out for waffles crepes instead. Then Jared took a sudden turn to the left, we all followed him back behind the guy selling calamari (really, seafood at the Christmas Market?), and he brought us directly to a booth where we found heart shaped waffles on a stick. We finally had our waffles!
