St. Andrews - Spring Break 2017
The next stop on our spring break list was St. Andrews, which is basically the home of golf. It's a beautiful seaside town with many golf courses, the most of well-known probably being the Old Course with the iconic Swilcan Bridge with the town in the background. The nicest thing about the Old Course is probably that you can walk the entire course if you want to and you don't even have to be there to golf. The course is open to the public and it's kind of cool to walk around watching people as they play golf by the seaside even if you're not a big golf fan.
Jared thought it would be cool to be able to say that he'd hit a couple of balls at St. Andrews so we made our way to the driving range and grabbed some clubs and a bucket of balls. And guess what? It was cool! Everyone had the chance to hit ten balls and, since we can't do anything without making it a competition, a prize was offered to the girl who hit the longest ball. I think the reward was a treat of her choice?
Natalie went first and after a quick lesson from Jared she was ready to go. We were all surprised when she knocked it out of the park. Sorry, mixing things up here as that's clearly a baseball reference, but she really sent it flying. Maybe golf is her thing?
Abigail did alright, but couldn't beat Natalie's distance. Besides mini golf, this was her first time with a club in her hands so at least she hit the ball off the tee every time she swung and didn't whiff it at all.
Emily is another natural athlete and she even did a little beginner golf clinic one summer in Wyoming so this wasn't her first time playing golf even if it has been at least 10 years since that experience. She passed Natalie's longest ball and was our new front runner.
Not pictured are Jared, who showed us all how it should be done, and Samantha and I. Samantha was about as good as Abigail, not bad but not great. That made the winner of the longest ball competition me! The non-athlete who did whiff the ball a couple of times actually won. I'm thinking it was because I had more weight behind my swing than the girls did.
We spent the rest of our time in St. Andrews not exploring the castle, or the cathedral, or the golf museum, or even the university. All things that you'd think you'd do in St. Andrews. Instead, we went out to lunch at Nandos and then did some shopping. The highlight of the day had to be as soon as we got out of the car and were walking to the course when Jared was so transfixed by the golf course that he wasn't looking where was going and he ran right into a light post. We really shouldn't have laughed, but it was just so funny. Especially because Jared often pretends to run into light posts but this time it wasn't a joke. It was a great day!
