Selfie Sunday

I taught the lesson in Relief Society today, taking the topic for our discussion from Bonnie L. Oscarson's General Conference talk from last month, "The Needs Before Us." Sister Oscarson reminded us that, "...it’s easy to miss some of the greatest opportunities to serve others because we are distracted or because we are looking for ambitious ways to change the world and we don’t see that some of the most significant needs we can meet are within our own families, among our friends, in our wards, and in our communities. We are touched when we see the suffering and great needs of those halfway around the world, but we may fail to see there is a person who needs our friendship sitting right next to us in class." She encouraged us to look around each day for people who need us and to be "givers and suppliers" and not just "receivers and takers."

I felt impressed to teach this lesson for a couple of reasons. First, because her talk was one of my favorites this past General Conference but also because I'm so excited about the Light the World campaign that kicked off on Friday. I love participating in this initiative each year and am looking forward to finding ways to serve in the days leading up to Christmas. My challenge to you is the same as my challenge to the Relief Society sisters today - look around and find someone who needs you each day. Serving others doesn't have to be a big thing and it doesn't have to take a lot of time, but it will always communicate love to the person you're serving and bring both of you happiness.

Because we have afternoon church and don't have to leave for our meetings until 12:30ish our Sunday mornings are very relaxed, which is amazing. We have just four Sundays left until we switch back to the earlier start time. We're going to miss sleeping in and taking our time getting ready. But there's a benefit to early church as well - Sunday afternoon naps! In the meantime, we're taking full advantage of our low key Sunday mornings.

There's time for selfies, there's time for leisurely breakfasts, there's time to do crafts, there's even time for me to put on makeup and blow dry my hair. We're going to be a much less put together family come January!

Emily put the star on our tree this evening. We decorated most of the house on Wednesday but didn't put lights and decorations on the tree until Friday. The star didn't make it to its rightful place until today after the kids had taken their yearly vote and decided which sister would receive the honor of placing the star. I think Emily won because it's her last chance to do this as next year we'll only have three kids at home when we set up the tree. How crazy is that?
