Broken Bones and Christmas Wishes

We have six days off school this month and only one week where the girls will be in class on all five school days. Just one more reason why November is one of the best months of the year.  Today we joined some friends at the skating rink for some fun on our first day off during this year's no-school November. Natalie loves roller skating, she has been dropping hints about wanting rollerblades for Christmas this year nonstop, so she was super excited to head out and meet our friends today.

When we got there we found out that there was only one hour left of free skating time so got our rental skates laced up and quickly as we could and headed onto the floor.  About ten minutes before our hour was up Natalie lost control while skating as fast as she could and she fell, bracing herself with her hands to save her face. She came over to Jared and I and let us know that she'd fallen and that her arm was hurting. We checked her out and nothing looked terribly injured or out of place so we just had her take her skates off and tried to get her to calm down a little.

Natalie can be a dramatic kid and it's hard to know if she's actually hurt or just upset. We headed home with Natalie still sniffling and complaining that her arm hurt. We got her an ice pack when we got home and then she took a little nap while Jared unpacked his suitcases (because Jared came home from his month in America today!) When she woke up from her catnap she was still in pain so we checked her out again and we could now see a spot on her wrist that didn't look quite right, it was a little swollen, and it really hurt when she would rotate her arm even a little bit. So Natalie and I got back in the car and headed for the emergency room.

I was a little worried when we arrived that it would be a long wait - a sore arm isn't the biggest emergency and there were other people in the waiting room which we've never experienced at the ER on the base here. In the end, our visit didn't take that long. We were called back within 10 minutes where our very friendly and very German nurse took care of Natalie (and gave us great tips on which Christmas markets to visit when we go to Germany for Natalie's birthday next month) and got her all set up with a comfy bed and talked with radiology about getting her arm x-rayed.

Turns out Natalie wasn't just being dramatic, she really does have a broken arm. Now I feel a little guilty for waiting three hours to get our poor injured child checked out. She's got a temporary splint on her arm for the weekend while we wait for the swelling to go down and we'll follow up on Monday to get her a real cast. She's feeling better now that her arm is stabilized, but she's no longer sure she wants rollerblades for Christmas.

  1. Awh, Natalie that's no fun. So sorry about your brake. Maybe when you get your cast off, you will be brave and try skating again.
