Light the World

Every year during the Christmas season we look forward to the Light the World campaign! It's an invitation to serve others during the month of December and bring light to their lives. Today for our family home evening we watched the new video The Christ Child to kick off this year's campaign. The video is about twenty minutes long and it shows the events of the Nativity using the story recorded in the Bible. The actors speak Aramaic and there are no subtitles, but this is the story that everybody knows so that's okay. You guys, it is amazing.  There were tears shed as a sweet Spirit filled our little living room.

There's a family home evening lesson resource that is free to download that suggests having each person pay special attention to a character (Mary, Joseph, shepherds, etc) and think about how that character may have felt. We used that idea and after we watched the video we shared the thoughts and feelings we had as we watched. It's actually kind of hard to pick a favorite part of this excellent portrayal of the Savior's birth but watching the wise men when they came to worship Christ was so sweet. I also really liked thinking about the shepherds - people who weren't considered important by society but who recognized the importance of the message the angels brought them. Jared wondered what it must have been like to be Mary and Joseph, who knew that this child would be special, but who maybe didn't fully appreciate how special until after His birth.

As a family, we're looking forward to December and using this initiative as a way to stay focused on the true meaning of Christmas, honoring Jesus Christ, and serving others in small, simple, and meaningful ways. We invite you to join us in lighting the world this Christmas season - go to comeuntochrist.org and find out more about how you can take part in this beautiful worldwide effort.
